How To Measure Progress
How To Measure Progress
Success is not a straight road to the finish. It’s got ups and downs and often times setbacks along the way.
One of the best ways to measure progress is by gauging where you were at at your starting point and comparing it to where you’re at now.
For example, if, before starting training, your dog reactive dog would lose his cool at a dog he saw 100 feet away from him and it took several minutes on average to calm him down but today he doesn’t react until the dog is within 50 feet and only takes a minute or two to calm down, that’s progress!!! And it’s progress that’s moving you in the direction of your end goal. Your dog can now be 50% CLOSER to a dog then ever before without reacting and takes HALF the time to get over his reaction than he used to.
Or, let’s say you’re training your dog to stay. At the start of training, your dog couldn’t hold their position for more than 1-2 seconds, but now they can hold it for 30 seconds, that’s huge progress!!! Your dog can now hold a stay THIRTY TIMES LONGER then they could before you started training. And you’re not even done training yet!!
Do you see where I’m going with this?
Success isn’t measured by whether or not you’ve already achieved your goal. It’s measured incrementally in the small successes you achieve along the way.
